CAMPBELL CREEK YOUTH-ONLY KING SALMON FISHERY JUNE 27 AND 28

The 2015 Youth-Only Fishery for king salmon on Campbell Creek in Anchorage will take place from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on June 27 and 28.

Anglers who are 15 years of age and younger will have a chance to fish for king salmon on Campbell Creek between Dimond Boulevard and the Old Seward Highway. While adults can assist their children in landing fish, this section of Campbell Creek is closed to all fishing, including catch-and-release, for anglers 16 and older during this time.

“This Youth-Only Fishery is a great opportunity for young anglers to fish for king salmon,” Jay Baumer, the Sport Fish Assistant Area Management Biologist said. “The event is geared specifically toward young anglers. While adults can assist young people in casting and even fighting or landing a fish, it’s important to remember that by regulation a fish belongs to the person who originally hooks it.”

Youth anglers do not need a sport fishing license or king stamp, but they do need to have a free Harvest Record Card (available anywhere licenses are sold) with them to immediately record the harvest of any king salmon 20 inches or longer. Bait is allowed during this time.

While the water in Campbell Creek is low and the salmon are easily spooked, on a recent stream survey, a good number of kings were seen.

The harvest limit for king salmon 20 inches or longer is 1 per day, 1 in possession. These kings count toward the regional annual limit of 5 king salmon, 20 inches or longer. The harvest limit for king salmon less than 20 inches is 5 per day, 5 in possession. Campbell Creek is closed to fishing for other species of salmon at this time.

Kids may also find rainbow trout and Dolly Varden in the creek. The limits for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden in Campbell Creek are 5 per day and in possession for each species. Only one of the rainbow trout can be over 20 inches and only one of the Dolly Varden can be over 12 inches.

ADF&G staff and volunteers will be at the Taku-Campbell Lake parking lot off of 76th and King Street to help young anglers, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.  For more information, contact the Anchorage Sport Fish Information Center at (907) 267-2218.
