AYAKULIK RIVER CLOSED TO SPORT FISHING FOR KING SALMON

Beginning at 12:01 a.m., Friday, June 19, sport fishing for king salmon in the Ayakulik River drainage is closed.  As an added measure to reduce the probability of hooking mortality on incidentally caught king salmon, the use of bait is prohibited within Ayakulik River drainage, and only one single hook, artificial lure may be used.

The biological escapement goal (BEG) for Ayakulik River king salmon is 4,000 to 7,000 fish.  The total weir count on June 14 was 469 fish.  Despite previous management actions this year to reduce king salmon mortality during the inriver sport fishery, current low escapement indicates that the BEG will not be achieved.
