HATCHERY KING SALMON SPORT LIMITS INCREASED IN JUNEAU TERMINAL HARVEST AREA BEGINNING MONDAY, JUNE 1ST

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish announced today that sport fishing regulations for hatchery king salmon will be liberalized in a designated saltwater harvest area near Juneau (see attached map).  These new regulations are intended to provide additional opportunity to harvest hatchery king salmon returning to the Juneau area.

The hatchery king salmon regulations in the designated area will be in effect from 12:01 a.m. Monday, June 1 through 11:59 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2015.  These new regulations are as follows:

• The daily bag and possession limit is 4 king salmon of any size;

• King salmon harvested by nonresidents in the designated saltwater area and time period do not count toward their annual limit.

Anglers should note that the eastern boundary has changed to the Juneau-Douglas Bridge (please see attached map).

The department is liberalizing sport fishing regulations in the designated harvest area because the number of returning hatchery fish exceeds brood stock needs for the hatchery program.

Anglers should note that regional bag, possession and size limits for king salmon in the salt waters outside of the designated area are more restrictive, and that regulations prohibit anglers from possessing fish that exceed the limits for the waters where they are fishing.  Therefore, anglers who catch king salmon within the designated harvest area may not continue to fish outside of that area if they possess king salmon that do not comply with the regional king salmon bag, possession and size limits.

Freshwater drainages crossed by the Juneau Road System that are open to sport fishing are now open year-round to king salmon fishing with a bag and possession limit of 4 fish of any size. King salmon caught by nonresidents in these drainages do not count toward their annual limit. In addition, liberalized methods and means are in effect for Fish Creek Pond from June 1 – August 31. Please consult the regulation summary booklet for these regulations.
