Subsistence Director Andrews Retires

(Juneau) – Dr. Elizabeth Andrews, the Director of the Division of Subsistence in the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), has ended her long career in state service.

“Dr. Andrews will be missed,” said ADF&G Commissioner Denby Lloyd.  “Her vast wealth of knowledge and commitment to hard work provided invaluable leadership to the Division, and made a real difference in the lives of Alaska’s subsistence users.”

Andrews had a long and respected career with the Division of Subsistence.  She was a regional manager and directed subsistence research and studies in the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim region for several years and worked at headquarters as the Assistant Director of the Division before retiring for the first time.  She returned in 2005 to take over as Director.  She also served as Co-Chair of the Yukon River Panel, an international advisory body comprised of representatives of Alaska and Canada that co-ordinates management of salmon on the river that cross the international border.

The Division of Subsistence is charged with researching, quantifying, and providing the resulting information to the public about customary and traditional uses by Alaskans of fish and wildlife resources.  In addition, the Division provides scientifically-based information for fisheries and wildlife management programs; and to the Alaska Board of Fisheries and Board of Game for their use in evaluating reasonable opportunities for customary and traditional uses.

Dr. Andrews has retired into private life, and plans to move to Port Townsend, Washington.  “We at Fish and Game wish Elizabeth all the best in her retirement,” said Lloyd.  “She has been an exemplary public servant.”
