Downtown Wrangell

photo of Downtown Wrangell area wildlife Wildlife is one of many attractions that compete for your attention in Wrangell’s Downtown area. At Petroglyph Beach, located about a mile north of the ferry terminal, you can view ancient rock carvings (best at low tide). Scan for wildlife, including Steller sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, surf scoters, and pigeon guillemots. At the Muskeg Meadows Golf Course on Ishiama Drive, birders can explore forest, beach and marsh habitats looking for red-breasted sapsuckers, Wilson’s snipe, hairy woodpeckers, tree swallows and fox sparrows among others.

Notes

Be aware and respectful of golfers at all times while birding at the golf course. It is best to bird here during the week, when there are fewer golfers on the course. The owners are open to birders walking the course, but it is best to with the course staff before setting out.

Directions

Petroglyph Beach is about two miles north of the City Dock on Evergreen Avenue. To reach the Muskeg Meadows Golf Course, take Bennett Drive north away from downtown and then turn right on Ishiama Drive, which is just past the USDA Forest Service office.
