Requested Tracking Map
During the last ten days we have received locations from 1 ringed seal (solid line) and 5 bearded seals (dashed lines). The ringed seal, RS15-02-F (pink line), was tagged near St. Michael during August of this year with a SPOT tag attached to one of its hind flippers. Because this tag is attached to the seal’s flipper the tag only sends locations when the seal is hauled out on sea ice or land. The locations we received this week are the first locations we’ve received for this seal since it was tagged in August. It is currently located off the north coast of Russia, west of Pevek. The pink line is the assumed shortest path between the seal's tag location and the locations we received this week. As for the bearded seals, BS15-07-M is located in Kotzebue Sound and BS15-04-F has moved outside of the Sound. BS15-03-F is in Norton Sound. BS15-05-F is still near Mechigmenan Bay along the Russian coast, near Lorino. Lastly, BS15-02-M has moved to the north shore of St. Lawrence Island. Sea ice data are courtesy of the U.S. National Ice Center, dated 19 October (http://www.natice.noaa.gov).
