YOUTH-ONLY FISHING DAY AT THE HOMER SPIT, SATURDAY, JUNE 2

A portion of the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon will open for fishing only to anglers age 15 and younger on Saturday, June 2, from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. The youth-only sport fishing area will be posted. The remainder of the Fishing Lagoon will be open for fishing to anglers of all ages. All other sport fishing regulations remain in effect for the Fishing Lagoon and are found on Page 19 of the 2012 Southcentral Alaska Sport Fishing Regulations Summary booklet.

The Mobile Aquatic Classroom and Alaska Department of Fish and Game staff will be present at the Fishing Lagoon from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Staff will be available to help young anglers gear up and fish for king salmon returning to the lagoon. Fishing rods will be available for kids to check out and use at the lagoon. The best chance to hook fish starts at 12:00 p.m. as the rising tide flows into the lagoon. Other activities scheduled include how to identify all species of salmon and local clams, tying egg loops and fishing knots, and learning the best way for releasing fish.

Free loaner spinning rods are also available to all anglers for up to a week through the Homer Fishing Rod Lender Program. Fishing rods can be checked out at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center or the Homer ADF&G Office.

Youth fisheries were established by the Alaska State Legislature and implemented by the Alaska Board of Fisheries to provide special opportunity for young people to catch fish. Additional Youth Fishing Day at the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon in 2012 will be on Saturday, August 4, and Saturday, August 18.
