Discovery Labs

Discovery lab classroom The Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (KBRR) offers Discovery Labs in their Alaska Islands & Ocean Visitor Center’s lab classroom in Homer. Discovery Labs are innovative education programs provided to families, students, and visitors throughout the year. Each Discovery Lab focuses on a single topic and features 8 or more learning stations with hands-on and inquiry-based activities, research updates, sport fishing techniques and information, lots of touchable objects and organisms, and more. Depending on the topic and audience, the learning experience may be guided by KBRR staff or self-directed allowing each person to devote as much time as they choose at each of the stations. KBRR staff and volunteers are available at all labs for questions and further discussion, and labs that are open to the public are designed for people of all ages.
