Taku River Fishwheels - Sockeye Counts

The figures showing this year's weekly catches compared to the past 10 years have been removed because of methodology changes. Starting in 2018 to address fish wheel handling mortality, sampling changed from twice daily to hourly. Taku River fish wheels are no longer operated 24 hours per day; specifically for crew sampling safety, the fish wheels are not operated from 10 p.m. to 4a.m. As such, it is not appropriate to compare sockeye salmon catches in 2018 and 2019 to past years as a measure of indexing current year relative abundance. Because these data are used by Canada and the United States within the Pacific Salmon Treaty, discussions about how best to show this type of data next season will occur this fall and winter.
