Yakutat Bay Salmon

Description

Throughout the summer and much of the winter, Yakutat Bay produces good catches of salmon. Most Chinook are caught in May and June, while coho are caught in August and early September. Chinook salmon are often caught in close, protected areas of the inner bay. Coho salmon can also be found in protected areas, but are more commonly caught in Monti Bay or outside of Khantak Island. Anglers access these fisheries by lodge charter boats or by launching private boats at the Yakutat Harbor launch ramp. To target Chinook salmon, anglers troll using cut herring. For coho salmon, anglers troll with cut herring, lures, or jigs.

Winter Fishing for Chinook salmon is most productive inside the inner coves. Trolled herring is most often used and picking your days of good weather will be very important as foul weather can ocure on any day. The calmer days when trolling can be done easally are the most productive regardless of temperature.
