Fishing Opportunities

Coho (silver) salmon are found throughout the marine waters surrounding PWI from late June through August as they migrate to spawning locations in the streams and rivers of Southeast Alaska. During the summer they can be found feeding on baitfish along kelp beds and rocky structure. Common marine water techniques include trolling flashers with herring, hootchies and spoons. Coho salmon can also be caught mooching herring and jigging. As coho begin to migrate to freshwater streams they can be caught by shoreline anglers near estuaries casting spinners and spoons from shore.

Once coho enter freshwater they are readily available in pools and holding areas of streams and rivers. Anglers target coho with spinners, spoons, jigs and flies in a variety of colors.  Flashy flies are generally good for flyfishing. At times, the more abundant pink salmon can make coho fishing difficult as they take similar lures.

 

      

Marine anglers generally use flashers, herring, hootchies, spoons and spinners. Freshwater anglers use spinners, spoons, jigs and streamer flies in a variety of colors.

Marine coho are available in the waters surrounding PWI and can be accessed at boat launches in the communities around the island. Popular launches include False Island in Craig and the City of Klawock boat launch. Shoreline locations are numerous around the communities, however more remote locations can be found with the use of the United States Forrest Service map showing the numerous roads on PWI. This map is also an excellent resource for anglers seeking access to coho salmon in the streams and rivers of PWI.
