Chinook Salmon Marine Fisheries

Description

In April, May, and June anglers can be found casting for king salmon along local saltwater shorelines. For this fishery along the Juneau road system, popular shoreline locations to fish for king salmon include False Outer Point (Douglas Island), Point Louisa, The Breadline, and Gastineau Channel.

High concentrations of hatchery king salmon can be found along the Juneau road system near Auke Bay, Fritz Cove, and Macaulay Hatchery. These fish return to their release sites around the first week of June. Both marine boat and shoreline anglers target these fish from June through August. Early effort consists primarily of marine boat anglers and switches to shoreline effort as the season progresses and fish move closer to terminal release sites.

Tackle

Anglers targeting king salmon in the Juneau area typically use herring either trolled behind a flasher or cast from the shoreline with a small banana weight. Other popular choices for catching king salmon include trolling hoochies behind a flasher as well as casting large brightly colored spinners, spoons and flies.

Getting There

Marine boat anglers depart from local launch ramps and harbors to target king salmon both north and south of town. Popular boat fishing locations north of Juneau include The Breadline, Tee Harbor, Cordwood, and Point Retreat. South and West of Juneau, anglers fish throughout Gastineau Channel and along the east and west sides of Taku Inlet and the backside of Douglas Island.

Shoreline anglers target kings along the saltwater areas of False Outer Point, Fritz Cove, Pt. Louisa, Auke Bay and in front of Macaulay Hatchery.
