Chilkoot River sockeye and pink salmon

Description

The Chilkoot River is one of the most popular freshwater fishing sites in Southeast Alaska. A mile-long paved road provides easy access to the river and to Chilkoot Lake, where there is a boat ramp and a campground in Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site. Most anglers fish below the Chilkoot River weir from shore or by wading mid-river.  The outlet of Chilkoot Lake and the lake itself are also popular sites.

Sockeye salmon fishing occurs June through August. Pink salmon are available in July and August. Limits for sockeye salmon 16 inches or longer are 6 daily and 12 in possession. Limits for pink salmon are also 6 daily and 12 in possession.

Tackle

Rod and reel anglers use salmon eggs and artificial lures. Fly fisherman are successful using red streamers or small red sponges.
