Chilkat River Dolly Varden and cutthroat trout

Description

Although the Chilkat River is colored with glacial silt during the summer, it flows with clear green water in the winter and spring. From March through mid-May, anglers have good success fishing for Dolly Varden and cutthroat trout between Haines Highway mileposts 8 and 25.

Dolly Varden limits on the Chilkat River are 10 daily and 10 in possession, with no size restriction. Cutthroat trout limits on the Chilkat River are 2 daily and 2 in possession, with an 11-inch minimum and 22-inch maximum length.

Tackle

Most spin-casting anglers use pixies or salmon eggs. Fly fisherman also have success using fly patterns imitating salmon fry. Bait is allowed year round on the Chilkat River.

Numerous Haines Highway pullouts between milepost 8 and milepost 25 provide access to the Chilkat River.
