Commissioner Denby S. Lloyd


Commissioner Lloyd has a long and distinguished career in resource management and research in Alaska.  He has worked for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) and other resource management agencies in the state since 1974, serving in a number of positions in many parts of Alaska.  Before being appointed Commissioner by Governor Sarah Palin in February, 2007, Lloyd had been Director of ADF&G’s Division of Commercial Fisheries.

Lloyd has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in biological science and biological oceanography from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, and has written or co-written more than a dozen research publications.  He is a Certified Fisheries Scientist with the American Fisheries Society and an Associate of the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists.

Commissioner Lloyd represents the State of Alaska on numerous bodies, including the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, which oversees commercial and sport fisheries in federal waters off Alaska, and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, which addresses effects and recovery from the 1989 spill.

Before joining ADF&G, David Bedford served as Director of The SE AK Seiners Association. He has also owned and operated a commercial fishing vessel, and represented Alaska as a member of the Northern Panel for the Pacific Salmon Commission. Bedford holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a Juris Doctor of Law degree.

Patrick Valkenburg’s previous ADF&G experience includes serving as a wildlife research and management biologist for 23 years, and Research Coordinator for 3 years. More recently, he worked in the private sector as a wildlife research consultant and wildlife survey pilot in Alaska and Canada. Valkenburg holds a bachelor’s degree in wildlife science and a master’s degree in wildlife management.  He is also an experienced hunter and trapper, and is a hunter education instructor.
